Alastair MacDonald

Alastair Macdonald is a senior mining consultant based in Jakarta, Indonesia, with over a decade at PT SMG Consultants Indonesia. PT SMG is a leader in geological consulting, resource estimation, mine planning, and advisory services across coal, gold, nickel, manganese, bauxite, iron ore, and other minerals. 

Alastair has supported projects across Indonesia, Australia, China, Mongolia, Africa, Vietnam, Singapore, Russia, India, Bangladesh, New Zealand, the United States, Canada and also in South American countries, leveraging SMG’s expertise in advanced mining software and integrated landform design. 

Alastair is also the Vice President of the Djakarta Mining Club (DMC), Indonesia’s premier mining network with over 5,000 members, dedicated to promoting sustainable mining practices and supporting industry education through university scholarships.  

Previously, Alastair was Head of Events at IHS McCloskey (UK), delivering international coal trading conferences across key markets including Asia, Africa, Europe, and the Americas.

He also served as Business Development Director at Coaltrans Conferences (now Fastmarkets) and Euromoney Energy Events, leading major events focused on global energy markets, renewables, finance, logistics, and commodity trading.
